Quality Products

In the early 1970s, Seaboard Coast Line invested heavily in a 77 ton 53’ fixed end gondola design built both by Bethlehem Steel and as Bethlehem-supplied kits in their Portsmouth shops. These were built in 6 groups: SCL 131400-131899 (Bethlehem 1970), SCL 130350-130549 (Portsmouth 1971), SCL 130550-130749 (Portsmouth 1971-72), SCL 132550-132749 (Portsmouth 1972), SCL 132750-133149 (Portsmouth 1972), and SCL 133150-133549 (Portsmouth 1973). These six groups totaled 1900 cars. The cars all featured steel floors and Tu-Way lading anchors on the top chords. The cars lasted well into the CSX era, and many cars are sill in use today as maintenance of way cars.

SCL cars as-built were painted black with yellow lettering. There were some differences in how the Bethlehem and Portsmouth cars were lettered, primarily in regards to logos. We have not yet seen a photo of a car in anything but original paint. Cars were patched and re-patched over time, with very little trace of the original bright yellow lettering remaining.
SCL cars rode on Barber S-2-C trucks with trademark SCL axle retainers below the bearings. We have these available as our PN 4119-04.

Decals for Seaboard Coast Line cars will be available from Brian Bennett.
